Red Wine Reviews

Tinhorn Creek Merlot Review - Added November 7, 2012
Tinhorn Creek 2008 South Okanagan Valley Merlot is juicy, plummy, with a chocolate and earthy layer that makes it quite interesting.  It's not as smooth as most consumers would like, but if you like a little more depth to your wine, this is a great choice.  Quite sipable on its own, I personally suggest you try it with some meaty dishes to tackle the tannin in this beauty.

Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ReviewDuckhorn Napa Valley Caberent Sauvignon Review - Added July 10, 2012
Duckhorn Vineyards 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a vibrant red wine with amazing aromas of spearmint, violet, and blackcurrant.  In the mouth you’ll taste lots of fruit, such as blackberry, blueberry, chocolate and cola.  This wine will cellar for many years to come where it will continue to evolve, but if you plan on cracking it open soon, here are four foods we suggest pairing it with.

Dowie Doole Hunt Shiraz and Food Pairing ReviewDowie Doole Hunt Shiraz Review - Added July 3, 2012
Dowie Doole Hunt Shiraz is everything you’d want and expect out of an Australian Shiraz.  Lush deep red colours, with dark fruit flavours enhanced by licorice and cedar aromas.  French Oak maturation further enhances this wine with mocha and spicy plum flavours.

Blue Mountain Pinot Noir Review Blue Mountain Pinot Noir Review - Added June 6, 2012
Blue Mountain Pinot Noir, from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, is a beautiful example of excellent Canadian Wine.  Deep garnet in colour, this wine has some amazing black cherry and blue berry aromas.  On the palate you’ll find vanilla, cassis and cherry, followed by a spicy finish.  Click on the link to read why this is the best wine with Tuna.

Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel ReviewEdmeades Mendocino Zinfandel Review - Added May 21, 2012
One Red Wine we love here at What To Pair is Zinfandel.  We find it to be such a food friendly wine that tastes great with nearly anything.  Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel is a red wine that is bursting with red cherries, strawberries, and raspberries aromas and flavours.  The tannins are soft, and the finish has an amazing toasted vanilla and smoky sweetness. Inside are four great dishes that this wine will taste great with.

D'Arenberg Darry's Original Shiraz Grenache ReviewD'Arenberg's Darry Original is a wine that is packed full of fruity aromas and tastes of plum, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry.  While these fruit flavours are the star of this show, there are plenty of backing flavours of black olives, spice, cove and nutmeg to keep you entertained.  The tannins don’t pound away at you like an overindulgent drum solo; instead they simply hold the mass of flavours together.  In an age where many wines are trying to copy what everyone else is doing, D'Arenberg’s Darry’s Original Shiraz/Grenache living up to its ‘original’ mantel as this is a unique and pleasant wine.

Argyle Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Food PairingArgyle Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Wine and Food Pairing Review - Reviewed April 29, 2012
Argyle Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a light but medium bodied red wine that offers up spectacular aromas of cherry, cedar, strawberry and spice.  The flavours of fresh jammy fruits like strawberries or currants are quite juicy on the palate, while an earthy complexity will have you dreaming about strolling down a forest trail.   The finish on this wine is quite sassy, teasing you to take another sip.  Below are four foods we feel this wine would be divine with.

Mollydooker Two Left FeetMollydooker Two Left Feet - Posted March 30, 2012
If the name ‘Two Left Feet’ wasn’t already perfect, they might want to rename this wine to ‘Freebird’ in reference to the Lynyrd Skynyrd song with the incredibly long guitar solo finish.  While the length of Mollydoocker’s masterpiece is  epic, the real star of the show here is the artistry in combining shiraz, cabernet and...

Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre and Grilled AsparagusHenri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre and Food Pairings Review - Posted March 20th, 2012
Today is the first day of spring and I'm itching to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and do some spring cleaning on my lawn.  It's gonna be a hot day here in Southern Ontario, with temeratures reaching a high of 29 degrees.  After getting the BBQ all cleaned up I plan on taking a quick break, and grilling up some asparagus, and enjoying it with a nice cold glass of Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre.  That and the spring songs conducted by the robins are music to my ears.

Beer Reviews

Barking Squirrel Lager ReviewHop City Barking Squirrel Beer and Food Pairing Review - Added June 13, 2012
Hop City Barking Squirrel Amber Lager showcases light caramel malts with a slight nutty taste, followed by a grassy and citrus finish.  The colour of this beer is a beautiful amber-copper, and the nose has a fantastic brown sugar and bready sweetness.  Easy drinking enough to go on its own, however we’d prefer it with the following four foods. (We are a beer and food pairing website after all.)

Lake of Bays Rousse Red Ale ReviewMuch like the Province of Quebec it is based on, Lake of Bays Rousee Red Ale is a colourful and flavourful affair.  When you’re hit by the mahogany colour of this beer, you just know you’re not drinking another Lager dolled up with Red Dye #9.  The aroma is sweet, slightly citrusy, with a caramel malt edge.  Given the rich and creamy texture of this beer, the flavour is quite complex.  The dark roasted malts struts around with its bitter chocolate, dark cassis, vanilla, and toast flavours.  Meanwhile the center is nice and juicy with a clean and dry finish. This would be the perfect beer to warm you up on a chilly cottage evening, although we think it would be even better with these four great foods in our beer and food pairing article.

Alexander Keiths Cider ReviewAlexander Keith’s Cider is tangy and lip smacking beverage that strikes the perfect balance between being refreshing and flavourful.  This Cider is not overly sweet, strong, or complicated, however the nose on this beverage is incredibly aromatic.  The good people at Keith’s have worked hard to produce extremely appealing aromas of apple, pear and sparkling white wine.  The flavours aren’t as strong as the nose, which makes this quite the quaffable cider as it never comes across as boozy.  Instead, this is simply a well-crafted beverage that smells great, offers semi-sweet apple and pear flavours, and finishes dry and long.  Inside are four great foods that we recommend Keith's Cider with.

Peller Estates Private Reserve Rose ReviewPeller Estates Private Reserve Rose - Posted March 12, 2012
Peller Estates Private Reserve Rose will pair up with a wide variety of foods.  It's a dry wine, loaded with lots of red berry flavours, and a touch of bubblegum.  Give it a try for your upcoming Easter Dinner this season.

Sutter Home White Zinfandel ReviewSutter Home White Zinfandel is an off-dry rose wine made with the Zinfandel grape.  This wine has superb aromas and flavours of strawberries and melon.  The body is well balanced in that it is initially sweet, becomes a little creamy, and then finishes dry, making the wine simultaneously decadent and refreshing.  While this is the perfect wine to enjoy as an aperitif on a hot summer day, inside are four foods this wine would go great with.

Grey Goose Vodka and Food Pairing Review
- Spirit Reviewed April 24, 2012
Vodka and Food Pairing is not a popular topic.  At least not according to Google who said only 12 people in the world searched for Food and Vodka pairings last month.  It's rather unfortunate as Vodka and Caviar may be one of the best food and spirit pairings you may ever try.  It's right up there with Cake and Milk, Pinot Noir and Salmon, or Sauternes and Foie Gras.
